Question: An employee has recently requested maternity leave, how many weeks leave is she entitled to?
Answer: Under the Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2004 an employee is entitled to a minimum period of 26 weeks maternity leave. An employee who has taken maternity leave is also entitled to take a maximum of 16 weeks additional maternity leave, this extra leave must commence immediately after the end of the scheduled maternity leave period.
Question: How much notice should I give to an employee who is being made redundant?
Answer: The period of notice depends on the employee's length of service in accordance with legislation and as set out in his/her contract of employment.
Minimum notice is set out in the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts, 1973 - 2001 as follows:
